Little House on the Prairie Book Series

the little house book

A well-built and strong little house is way out in the country, perched on a hill surrounded by beautiful countryside. She happily watches the days, nights, seasons, and years go by her—daisies bloom, apple trees blossom, snow falls, and the moon grows from a thin new moon to a full moon and back again. As the years pass, she notices the city lights coming closer, and the quiet country soon becomes a bustling city.

The family moves from Kansas to Minnesota and settle themselves on the banks of Plum Creek in Redwood County. Pa builds a house for the family while the girls get to go to school for the first time at Barry Corner School. The family also begins to attend the town church on Sundays where they meet new friends. Things are going well for the family until a plague of Rocky Mountain Locust devastates their crops. The family is struggling to survive so Pa heads east alone to get a job in order to make enough money to get them through the year. The First Four Years derives its title from a promise Laura made to Almanzo when they became engaged.

Story

Many of the incidents in the book are actual situations that happened to the Ingalls family. In fact, the years the events actually took place were 1869 to 1870. So Laura was actually two to three years old while the Ingalls family lived in Indian Territory during 1869–1870, and she did not remember the incidents herself.

Next, the small houses are replaced by tenements and apartments. Streetcars, an elevated railroad, and a subway start running past the house. Finally, two gigantic skyscrapers are built, one on each side. Now standing in a large city, the house is sad because she misses being on the small hill in the countryside and her exterior looks shabby. The Little House is a 1942 children's picture book written and illustrated by Virginia Lee Burton.

Pa tells Laura that he knows the winter is going to be hard because muskrats always build a house with thick walls before a hard winter, and this year, they have built the thickest walls he has ever seen. In mid October, the Ingallses wake with an unusually early blizzard howling around their poorly insulated claim shanty. The fourth book in the series, On the Banks of Plum Creek, takes place from 1875 to 1877. Laura's age is still not accurately portrayed in relation to actual events.

Laura and Mary go to school for the first time at Barry Corner School, where they meet their teacher, Miss Eva Beadle, and befriend Christy and Cassie Kennedy. Laura plays with her bulldog Jack when she is home, and she and Mary are invited to a party at the Olesons' home. Laura and Mary invite all the girls (including Nellie) to a party at their house to reciprocate. The family soon goes through hard times when a plague of Rocky Mountain locusts, or grasshoppers, devastates their crops. For the family to survive, Pa has to go east alone to get a job to make money to get them through the year. The whole family is very excited when he returns from this job.

As far as a man could go to the north in a day, or a week, or a whole month, there was nothing but woods. This sweet tale about a little house has one of the best happy endings you could hope for. Virginia Lee Burton won the Caldecott Medal in 1943 for The Little House—the book is also a short animated film made by Disney in 1952. This is followed by roadside stands, gas stations, and more little houses.

Laura is annoyed by Nellie's chatter and flirtatious behavior towards Almanzo. Shortly thereafter, Nellie moves back to New York after her family loses its homestead. Already fond of Laura and wanting to ease her homesickness, Almanzo takes it upon himself to bring her home and back to school each weekend. The fifth book in the series, By the Shores of Silver Lake is based on Laura's late childhood spent near De Smet, South Dakota, beginning in 1879.

So far as the little girl could see, there was only the one little house where she lived with her father and mother, her sister Mary and baby sister Carrie. A wagon track ran before the house, turning and twisting out of sight in the woods where the wild animals lived, but the little girl did not know where it went, nor what might be at the end of it. Laura's family's first home in Minnesota is made of sod, but Pa builds a clean new house made of sawed lumber beside Plum Creek. The money for materials will come from their first wheat crop. Then, just before the wheat is ready to harvest, a strange glittering cloud fills the sky, blocking out the sun. Soon millions of grasshoppers cover the field and everything on the farm.
